Universal Process Notation

An easily understood, structured business process notation for business people.

For any organization that wants to embrace process thinking, adoption is critical.  Process diagrams need to be understood by thousands of employees across large organizations. Often the end user will need to understand process activities outside of their own functional area.  And often they will be looking at process diagrams in a language that is not their own.

Good design is fundamental to adoption.  It means a focus on making things as easy as possible for the process consumer.

It is widely agreed that diagrams help users to visualize process flows.  But some methodologies use an extraordinary number of different symbols on their diagrams.  For the process consumer to become fluent in the notation language - learning to “speak process” - can mean significant costs.

Even worse, a complex symbolic process language becomes a real barrier to adoption. The process consumer is baffled and switches off because all they want is help to do their job.

Universal Process Notation (“UPN”) is an easy to use Business Process Notation intended for general use, to provide usable process information to the executors of business process, while providing for the technical needs of an IT audience.

UPN is Nimbus’ recommended notation for use with Nimbus Control.  It is proven in use in hundreds of Nimbus clients around the world.

The guiding principle for UPN is to describe processes in a format which is easily understood by all employees, not just a team of highly trained process specialists.  It reflects the Nimbus philosophy: that we want to make life at work easier, quicker and more valuable.
